Travel Advisory For Visitors Traveling From the North Side of
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Due to a rockslide on Interstate 40 at the Tennessee • North Carolina state line, the DOT has closed 1-40 for clearing and repair. Visitors coming from north of the Smokies to visit Fontana Village are advised to use one of the two following options:
OPTION 1: Via Asheville. Driving south on Interstate 81, take Interstate 26 (Exit 57A) west to Asheville. At exit 31B, take Interstate 40 west to US 74 (exit 27) – the Great Smoky Mountains Expressway. Follow US 74/19 past Bryson City to Hwy. 28 North.
OPTION 2: Via West Knoxville. Driving east on I-40, take Hwy. 129 /Alcoa Highway (exit 386B) 20 miles and then left on Hwy. 129/Calderwood Hwy. Then left for 9.3 miles on NC Hwy. 28 into the Village.
The I-40 closure does not affect any routes from within North Carolina or major thoroughfares from the southeast.
