Old 288 5 miles (in and out) Easy
Hike from Fontana Dam along the Old 288 road, which is the road mostly flooded when the dam was finished, to 129 and back. This easy stroll offers the opportunity to catch glimpses of artifacts like buckets, wine bottles, and bricks from those settlements that once were established here. We may also get a glimpse of some of the dissidents of Paynetown Cemetery as they prepare for Decoration Day on Sunday.
May 17
Forest Service Road 6 miles (in and out) Easy
Take the forest service road at the end of Lower Tuskegee to Fontana Lake where the cabin from the movie Nell once stood. This is an easy hike along the road with a great turn around point. If you like swimming, bring a suite. If the weather warm enough we’ll jump in the Lake for a nice refreshing dip.
May 24
Twentymile Loop 7.6 miles (loop)
Easy to Moderate
Have no fear; Twentymile did not receive this name because the hike is that many miles. We will start this hike from the most secluded ranger station and make way to Cascades where James Proctor once had his tub mill. Further up the trail we will leave Twentymile trail at Proctor Gap to Twentymile Loop trail and hike through a forest once cleared by the Kitchens Lumber Co. At the end of this trail we will come down Wolf Ridge Trail and follow the tumbling waters of Moore Spring Branch.
May 25
Slickrock Wilderness 6.6 – 8 miles (loop)
Moderate to Strenuous
For this hike we will be hiking Hangover Lead, Yellowhammer Gap, Nichols Cove and Windy Gap trail in the Slickrock Wilderness. This is a spectacular series of trails with panoramic views of this large tract of wilderness. One of the interesting landmarks we will come across on this trek is the grave of two young twins who died shortly after birth. A sad reminder of the people who once lived here and the rough times they had.
