November 24 Old 288 5 Miles Easy
Hike from Fontana Dam along the Old 288 road, which is the road mostly flooded when the dam was closed, to 129 and back. This easy stroll offers the opportunity to catch glimpses of artifacts like buckets, wine bottles, and bricks from those settlements that once were established here. We will visit Paynetown Cemetery as well. Car Shuttle

December 1 Lakeshore Trail 6 Miles Easy
(Fontana Dam to Birchfield Branch)
Walk portions of Old 288 through a second hardwood growth forest originally timbered by Whiting Manufacturing Company. You will be reminded of the old road when you come across some old abandoned Dodges. On this hike you will have views of Fontana Lake, as well as see small waterfall along the creek we will be following. Car Shuttle

December 8 Lakeshore Trail 5 Miles Moderate
(Proctor to Ramp Cove)
Old 288, the Calhoun house, cemeteries, and lone chimney are a few of the experience on this trail. This moderately strenuous hike offers a lot of history, along with many other aspects the Smokies have to offer. Boat Shuttle

December 15 Lakeshore Trail 6.8 Miles Moderate
(Proctor to Campsite 81)
Strut along a trail once known to the people of Proctor as Struttin’ Street. On this hike you will pass where several home settlements once stood, and you can still see evidence of them. This hike is not only fun because of the varied terrain and a second growth forest, but also because of how underused this section of Lakeshore is. Boat Shuttle

December 22 Appalachian Trail 7 Miles Moderate/Strenuous
(Yellow Creek Gap to Fontana Dam)
The world’s most popular long distance trail runs right through the Village, so we love hiking it. Bounce from an elevation of 2,980 feet at the start up to 3720 feet, way down to 500 feet. On this hike we will get views of Fontana Lake and the CCC’s Cable Gap Shelter, which was built in 1939. Car Shuttle

December 29 Appalachian Trail 8 miles Moderate/Strenuous
(Stecoah Gap to Yellow Creek Gap)
Stecoah Gap to Yellow Creek is quite a climb. The first mile is a gradual 1000’ climb. The next mile is the “strenuous” part. In what is really less then a mile you hike up nearly 1000 feet. It’s just enough to make you dislike going uphill. At the end of the hike you loose 1000 feet in two miles to make it all even. On this hike we will reach a nice ridge with spectacular views of Snowbird Mountains. Car Shuttle

The Fontana Hiking Club is excited about future hikes. One that we want everyone to know about is our 75 on 75th. In 2009 all of the FHC hikes are going to be scheduled to complete all 800 miles of trail in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We chose this year because of the significant between the Parks 75th Anniversary and the 75-day hikes it can take to complete our goal. With a little bit of effort we can hike all the trails in one year. Please keep up with the website for details.
